This treat is a gluten-free take on Filipino Banana Lumpia, which is banana wrapped and fried in a lumpia wrapper. This version is made with rice paper.

What is Banana Lumpia (Turon)?

Banana lumpia, also known as Turon is a Filipino dish that is made with bananas that are wrapped in a lumpia wrapper and crisped to perfection! The traditional version is made with a lumpia wrapper (similar to an egg roll wrapper) which is flour-based. I’ve been experimenting with rice paper a lot recently and am making this version with rice paper!

The Ingredients for Banana Lumpia

  • Banana.
  • Cinnamon and Coconut Sugar. These ingredients coat the banana and add to the deliciousness!
  • Rice Paper. I like this Rice paper!
  • Coconut Oil.
  • Dairy-Free Chocolate Chips or Caramel sauce. Optional for serving!

Can you use something other than rice paper?

Another alternative that I love to use is coconut wraps! You can try to make something similar with coconut wraps, but they aren’t quite as easy to roll around the banana as rice paper is.

Gluten Free Banana Lumpia (Turon)

  • Author: Michelle
  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 3 servings 1x
  • Diet: Gluten Free

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tbsp coconut sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 3 large bananas
  • 3 pieces of rice paper (see notes for AIP option)
  • Coconut oil (or coconut oil spray)

For serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine the cinnamon and coconut sugar in a bowl and set aside.
  2. Peel the bananas and slice off the ends. Roll the bananas in the cinnamon sugar to coat all sides and set aside.
  3. Working with one piece of rice paper at a time, dip the rice paper in a large bowl of water for about 5 seconds or until softened.
  4. Transfer the rice paper to a large plate or clean workstation. Add one banana to the center of the rice paper. Roll the rice rolls by folding in the two corners, then folding up the bottom edge and rolling into a tight roll. Set aside and repeat for all of the ingredients.
  5. To make the air fryer- Line the air fryer with parchment paper. Add the banana lumpia and spray or brush with coconut oil. Air fry at 375 F for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through, or until crisped to your liking.
  6. To make on the stove-Using a large pan, heat about 2 tbsp of coconut oil over medium-high heat. Carefully add the lumpia and cook for about 2 minutes on each side or until crisp.
  7. Remove from the air fryer (or stove) and serve with a side of melted chocolate or caramel sauce for dipping if desired.

Notes

To make this grain-free, you can try to use coconut wraps! They aren’t quite as easy to roll around the banana as rice paper is, but you can still get a decent wrap around it. The cooking process is similar, but watch the cook time to crisp to your own liking.
