Homemade Sushi Hand Roll
Temaki-style handroll is the easiest way to make sushi at home, and this step-by-step guide will show you exactly what to do!
Sushi hand rolls are one of my favorite foods to order out! They’re always yummy and can be made in so many ways. I decided to finally try my hand at making it at home, and to my surprise, it’s quite easy!
What is a sushi hand roll?
A sushi hand roll is sushi that’s rolled into a cone shape rather than a long cylinder that’s cut into pieces like maki-style sushi.
It’s not actually cut, so I find it a lot easier to make at home than maki-style sushi rolls!
What you need to make a sushi hand roll
- Nori sheets. You can buy this in most grocery stores these days, but definitely online or in Asian Grocery stores like H Mart.
- Sushi rice. I promise it’s not intimidating to make! It’s really just as simple as regular rice.
- Rice vinegar. This is added to the rice.
- Vegetables. I like to use cucumber, carrots, and avocado, but you can easily make rolls entirely out of cucumber, avocado, etc., and mix and match as you’d like.
- Sashimi. This is optional if you’d prefer to just make a veggie roll. I typically can find this at whole foods, but Asian Grocery store like H Mart should also have it.
Step-by-step guide for making a sushi hand roll
- Step one. Rinse the sushi rice and prepare according to package instructions.
- Step two. Slice the nori sheets in half. You should have 12. Working with one nori sheet at a time, add about 1/4 cup of rice to the left half of the sheet. Spread a thin layer of wasabi onto the rice if desired.
- Step three. Place the sashimi-grade fish diagonally onto the rice, towards the center. Add a few pieces of cucumber, carrot, and avocado next to the sashimi. Add sesame seeds if desired.
- Step four. Fold the bottom left corner over the sashimi and vegetables, and use your finger to hold it closed. Fold in the longer end of the nori to form the handroll.
Tips & tricks
- Be patient! Your very first roll likely won’t be perfect. It’ll take a few tries to really nail the motion with your hands, so be patient with yourself if you don’t get it looking restaurant quality on the first try.
- Add a sauce. These definitely need sauce! I simply serve mine with coconut aminos, but you could do soy sauce or a spicy chili sauce.
Modifications
- Make veggie rolls. If you can’t find sashimi-grade fish, you can easily just make veggie rolls with carrots, cucumber, and avocado.
- Use tuna instead of salmon. Sashimi grade ahi tuna would be a great swap for salmon.
How many handrolls should you make per person?
If this is a main dish, I recommend about two hand rolls per person, though this varies depending on the person and the rest of the meal!
