This is how you make the perfect, easy and healthy smoothie bowl every time, with or without bananas! Learn how to make a green smoothie bowl, a triple berry bowl, and more.

What is a Smoothie Bowl?

Smoothie bowls are smoothies taken to the next level! They’re basically a big, thick and creamy smoothie in a bowl with lots of toppings that you eat with a spoon like ice cream! Basically, it’s just like ice cream and a smoothie had a baby.

Smoothie bowls seem simple, but it can be hard to get the perfect flavor and consistency. This a full guide on how to get your smoothies creamy, and delicious every time!

How to Make a Perfect Smoothie Bowl

1. Follow the perfect smoothie formula:

  • 1 cup frozen fruit
  • 1 sliced frozen banana
  • 1/2 cup greens (like spinach)
  • 1 cup milk of choice (almond milk, coconut milk, etc.)
  • 1/2 cup yogurt of choice (greek yogurt, coconut yogurt, etc.)
  • 1-2 scoops of protein powder

2. Blend the smoothie bowl.

Smaller blenders like the magic bullet are great, but I find they can be a little challenging if you’re wanting to make a bigger smoothie bowl. Here are some great options for smoothie bowl blenders…

  • Vitamix blenders
  • Ninja blenders

3. Add Toppings! What are the best smoothie bowl toppings?

  • Fresh berries
  • Diced mango or pineapple
  • Diced mango
  • Chia seeds
  • Hemp hearts
  • Chocolate
  • Kiwi

How do you make a smoothie bowl without a banana?

  • 1 1/2 cup frozen fruit
  • 1/2 cup greens (like spinach)
  • 1 cup milk of choice (almond milk, coconut milk, etc.)
  • 1/2 cup yogurt of choice (greek yogurt, coconut yogurt, etc.) or avocado
  • 1-2 scoops of protein powder

What yogurt should you use to make smoothie bowls?

Personally, I love to use coconut yogurt as a dairy-free option! Culina coconut yogurt is for sure the best option. It’s thick, creamy, and has the best ingredients.

If you can tolerate dairy, Greek yogurt is another great option!

How can you add more nutrients to your smoothie bowls?

  • Steamed and frozen cauliflower. This is a popular trick to add hidden veggies and make the consistency thicker.
  • Hemp hearts, chia seeds, or flax seeds. Hemp hearts particularly are nutrient-dense and delicious!
  • Flax oil. Just a small bit of flax oil (2-3 tsp) adds lots of added nutrients to your smoothie bowl.
  • Healthy fats. Like avocado, coconut butter, nut, or seed butter.
  • Protein powder. Protein is essential for feeling satiated! This levels up your smoothie bowl to more of a nutritionally balanced meal.

Should you use crushed ice in your smoothie bowl?

I recommend sticking with frozen fruit rather than adding ice to a smoothie. Ice doesn’t blend as well, and it doesn’t make your smoothie as thick and creamy as fruit. It can also dilute the flavor and make it taste more watery.

Can you make smoothie bowls ahead of time?

The best way to prep smoothie bowls is to prep all of the ingredients in a freezer bag (reserving the liquid, yogurt or avocado, and the toppings) and stash it in the freezer. That way, all you need to do is blend with the remainder of the ingredients and top with your favorite toppings! No extra prep for busy mornings.

You can easily freeze frozen smoothie prep for 3 months. I recommend freezing everything flat to make it easier to blend.

How do you make smoothie bowls thicker?

  • Add more fruit. Adding about 1/4 cup of extra frozen fruit can be all the smoothie bowl needs.
  • Add less milk. If you know you like your smoothie bowls extra thick and your blender can handle less liquid, use 1/4 cup less milk and add more as needed.
  • Add steamed and frozen cauliflower. A secret ingredient to making smoothie bowls thicker.
