Why you’ll love these apple pie rice paper rolls

Once September hits, I’m all about apple recipes! Recipes like my sour apple gushers and apple chicken sausage vegetable skillet definitely satisfy my craving for apples, but I truly can’t  get enough.

I don’t want to wait until Thanksgiving for apple pie vibes; I want them now. These apple pie rice paper rolls can satisfy your craving for apple pie early and with way less effort. They’re made with a simple cinnamon apple filling, wrapped in rice paper, and crisped to perfection in a pan. Drizzle with caramel on top, and you have the perfect September treat. Here’s why you’ll love it…

  • It’s serious apple pie flavor! It’s almost Fall and what could be better than apple pie flavor!
  • It’s low effort! I love apple pie, but love that this treat requires way less effort and has similar flavor.

Recipe Ingredients

  • Apples. I recommend using Honeycrisp apples.
  • Coconut Sugar. The perfect way to sweeten these apple rice paper rolls.
  • Eggs and almond milk. This egg wash mixture helps to make the rice paper extra crispy!
  • Arrowroot Starch, Lemon Juice, and Cinnamon.
  • Rice Paper. I like to use this smaller rice paper.
  • Coconut oil or ghee. For a dairy-free version, coconut oil works great, but ghee or butter is also perfect!
  • Caramel Sauce. I recommend using my recipe for an easy, dairy-free caramel sauce.

Michelle’s Tips & Tricks

  • The rice paper can take some work. If it’s your first time working with rice paper, it takes a bit of practice to get the motion down, but go slow and be careful!
  • Use food-safe gloves while making these. These get messy fast with the egg wash, so I recommend using gloves!
  • But get messy and eat it with your hands! I find these kind of inconvenient to eat with a fork and knife. Just dive in with your hands.

Tips for how to make apple pie rice paper rolls in the air fryer

  • Cook the apples for slightly less time, as they will cook more in the air fryer.
  • Preheat the air fryer to 350 F. Line with vented parchment paper and add the rice paper rolls, lightly spraying with oil. Cook for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through.

A note for egg-free

You can also make this recipe by softening the rice paper with just water instead of the egg wash, though it will be slightly less crispy.

Instructions

  • Using a medium bowl, combine the apples, coconut sugar, arrowroot, lemon juice and 1 tsp of cinnamon. Toss to fully coat.
  • Add 1 tbsp of coconut oil to a pan set over low heat. Add the apples to the pan and suate for 5 minutes or until fork tender, but not completly soft. Set aside.
  • Whisk the egg, almond milk and 1/2 tsp of cinnamon in a large shallow bowl.
  • Working with one piece of rice paper at a time, dip it into the egg mixture to lightly soften. Add the rice paper to a plate, dip one more piece of rice paper and layer on top of the other piece. Allow to sit to soften for about a minute.
  • Spoon about 1/4 cup of the apple into the center of the rice paper. Roll the rice paper by folding in the two corners, then folding up the bottom edge and rolling it into a tight spring roll. Set aside and repeat for all of the rice paper and apples.
  • Using a large pan, heat 1 tbsp of coconut oil (or ghee) over medium-low heat. Add 2-3 rice paper rolls to the pan at a time (making sure not to overcrowd the pan).
  • Sear the rolls for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until crispy. Set aside on a plate.
  • Serve topped with caramel sauce!
