Homemade Sour Apple Gushers
These copycat sour apple gushers are a homemade version of the classic! They’re made with real fruit, gelatin, no dyes, and a grape filling.

Why you’ll love these homemade sour apple gushers
I loved Gushers as a kid! They were basically a candy filled with jelly that burst in your mouth. After my blue raspberry Gushers went viral on social media, I’ve been wanting to make a version with the same flavors as my sour apple ring gummies for fall.
These copycat Gushers are made with apple juice, natural dye, gelatin, and have a grape jam filling for the perfect easy and delicious flavor! Here’s why you’re going to love them…

- Made with natural food dye. Instead of green food dye, this recipe uses a touch of spirulina for the perfect green color.
- Homemade candy that’s easy to make. Making candy can actually be pretty complicated in terms of getting the temperatures right. This recipe is super forgiving and easy to make with simple tools and methods!
Recipe Ingredients
See the recipe card below for full information on ingredients and quantities.

- Apple and lemon juice. The perfect sweet and sour combination.
- Spirulina. This is a natural food coloring! You can try matcha, but it will change the flavor.
- Gelatin. This gives the gummies their structure.
- Grape jam. The perfect easy filling!
How to make Sour Apple Gushers
Here are the simple steps, with photos, to make this recipe. Find full instructions in the recipe card.

Step One. Combine the apple juice and blue spirulina then sprinkle over the gelatin. Allow to sit for 5 minutes to harden. Then heat on medium low until the mixture returns to liquid.

Step Two. Use a dropper to transfer the gummy mixture into a mold and fill only half way. Transfer mold to freezer to set

Step Three. Add the grape jam to a piping bag and add a small dot of filling into the center of each gummy.

Step Four. Use a dropper to fill the rest of the gummy molds, ensuring that the jam is covered. Return the full gummy molds to the fridge and allow to set for 3-4 hours.
Tips & Tricks
- Make it extra sour with a citric acid coating. The sour element comes from the lemon, but if you want to make these even more sour, add a coating of citric acid!
- Switch up the filling. You can also use strawberry or raspberry jam!
Storage Instructions
These gushers are best on the first day, but store in the fridge for 2-3 days. They need to be kept in the fridge to maintain their texture.
