Why you’ll love these rice paper fried pickles

Fried pickles are a classic Southern appetizer! They’re made with sliced pickles that are battered and deep-fried and served with a dip like ranch. I love turning Southern classics gluten-free and healthier, like my One Pan Southern Fried Cabbage and Sausage and Southern Bacon and Okra Skillet, and it was finally time to tackle fried pickles.

These fried pickles taste like the real deal but with a twist. Instead of batter, we’re using rice paper to get that crispy coating, and instead of a deep fryer, we’re using the air fryer!

Here’s why you’ll love it…

  • Gluten-free fried pickles! Rice paper is gluten-free, making this the perfect solution for gluten-free fried pickles.
  • The easiest appetizer ever. All you need is 3 ingredients (egg, pickles, and rice paper) and extremely minimal prep for a total crowd-pleaser app. Serve it for game day, holidays, or just because.
  • Fried pickles but without the deep fryer. This recipe uses an air fryer for a mess-free solution that requires less oil, making it both cheaper and lighter.

  • Pickles. Use any pickles you like, as long as they’re whole! Sliced pickles will be harder to wrap in rice paper, so I recommend sticking to whole pickles. I also found it easier to use smaller pickles, but you can try to make this recipe with larger pickles as well!
  • Rice paper. If you’re using small pickles, use smaller rice paper (like this) or slice your rice paper in half.
  • Egg. Egg helps to get the rice paper extra crispy.

Tips & Tricks

  • Make it crispier by cooking it longer in the air fryer. I’ve found this recipe won’t overcook with an extra minute or so. If it’s not crispy enough, add 1-2 more minutes in the air fryer.
  • Serve with a dip! I recommend using ranch, or you can try a vegan queso.

  • 5 pieces rice paper
  • 5 whole pickles, I recommend baby pickles!

Instructions

  • Transfer the rice paper to a clean plate and allow to sit for a minute to soften further.
  • Add a pickle to the center of the rice paper. Fold in the edges and roll the rice paper up around the pickle. Set aside and repeat with all of the pickles and rice paper.
  • Preheat the air fryer to 400 F. Carefully add vented parchment paper. Add the pickles and spray with oil
  • Make sure the pickles are arragned so they weigh down the parchment paper.
  • Cook for 5 minutes and carefully flip. Cook for another 5-7 minutes or until the rice paper is crisped to your liking.
