Cheese is the ultimate comfort food. You may feel like cheesy vibes are off the table if you’re dairy free, but think again! This beef skillet is super creamy and cheesy with zero dairy or cashews. It’s easy to make, and will totally fulfill your comfort food cravings.

The Ingredients for the Dairy-Free Cheesy Beef Skillet

  • Ground Beef. Ground turkey will also work in this recipe.
  • Dairy-Free Cheese Sauce. You’ll use this recipe! It’s cashew-free and packed with veggies.
  • Shredded Dairy-Free Cheese. This is optional! It’s just as good with just the cheese sauce, but the cheese on top just makes it cheesier.  I recommend going with a homemade dairy-free cheese like this or this. For storebought, you can try this if you tolerate nightshades.
  • Garlic Powder, Salt, and Pepper.
  • Cilantro. Fresh for topping!
  • Yellow Onion and Sweet Potato.

How to make the Dairy-Free Cheesy Beef Skillet

  • Brown the ground beef and onion and set aside.
  • Then saute the sweet potato.
  • Add the ground beef and onion back to the pan and pour the cheese sauce over.
  • If adding, add shredded dairy-free cheese on top and transfer to oven.
  • Serve topped with chopped cilantro.

Tips and Tricks

  • Cook the cheese sauce ahead of time. It freezes great, so I make a big batch at once and freeze it in portions to use in recipes like this, or as a dip or drizzle with veggies.
  • Add more veggies. One of my favorite tricks for adding veggies to meals is adding cauliflower rice to ground beef. You can add about 1/2 cup of cauliflower rice, and just add extra cheese sauce!

What do you serve with this recipe?

This recipe is a pretty good one-pan meal by itself, but you can also serve it alongside some greens like a salad or roasted broccoli, or serve it over cauliflower rice.

Can you make this recipe without the shredded cheese on top?

Yes! That’s actually how I’ve made it for myself before, and it’s still just as yummy with the creamy cheese sauce alone.

Dairy Free “Cheesy” Beef & Sweet Potato Skillet

  • Author: Michelle
  • Yield: 3 servings 1x

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 3/4 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 yellow onion, diced
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper (omit pepper for AIP)
  • 1 medium sweet potato, diced
  • 1 1/2 cup dairy-free cheese sauce
  • Shredded dairy-free cheese (see notes)
  • 2 tbsp cilantro, chopped

Instructions

  1. Set a large skillet over medium heat and add the ground beef and onion. Season and crumble until fully cooked through. Set aside and reserve about 2 tbsp of fat in the pan, discarding the rest.
  2. Add the sweet potato to the pan and lightly season with salt and pepper. Saute for 7-9 minutes or until tender and lightly crisp.
  3. Add the ground beef and onion back to the pan and pour the cheese sauce over. Stir to combine, coating the skillet in the sauce.
  4. If desired, add shredded dairy-free cheese on top. Transfer to the oven (set at 400F) and allow to melt.
  5. Serve topped with chopped cilantro.

Notes

  • The shredded cheese is optional! It’s just as good with just the cheese sauce, but the cheese on top just makes it cheesier looking and feeling.  I recommend going with a homemade dairy-free cheese like this or this for AIP. For storebought, you can try this if you tolerate nightshades.
