Homemade Paleo Dulce De Leche
This homemade Dulce de Leche is the perfect finisher for any dessert! It’s dairy-free, paleo, vegan, and AIP-friendly.
What is Dulce De Leche?
Dulce de Leche is a thick, delicious South American sauce that resembles the color and consistency of caramel sauce! It was one of my all-time favorite things to top every dessert off with – cake, ice cream, cookies, you name it!
Traditionally, dulce de leche is made with sweet milk and sugar, but this version is made gluten-free, dairy-free, grain-free and refined sugar free!

It’s made with nourishing, healthy ingredients
It’s made with no gluten, dairy, grains, or refined sugars!

How to Make Paleo Dulce De Leche
- Combine ingredients & cook the sauce: Set the stove to medium-low heat and place the pot on the stove. Add all of the ingredients to a large pot and stir well to combine, continuing to stir until the coconut sugar has dissolved. Bring the pot to a medium simmer. Allow to simmer for 20-25 minutes. The sauce should reduce and thicken.
- Transfer & Cool: Allow to cool before enjoying or transferring to glass and storing it in the fridge.
The Ingredients You’ll Need
Coconut Milk
The base of this sauce!
Coconut Sugar & Backstrap Molasses
They bring the sweetness and texture to the sauce
Lemon Juice & Sea Salt
To fully round out the flavor
Tapioca Starch
To thicken the sauce and make the texture perfect!
Can you make this recipe coconut free?
I have not tested a way that is both nut-free and dairy-free, and can’t recommend a swap that would yield the same result.
Can you make this recipe with less sugar?
The recipe does need a certain amount of sugar to come together, so cutting it down wouldn’t create the same final product. The best way to lower the sugar content is just to scale back the recipe in general.
What do you serve with this dulce de leche?
This sauce tastes amazing over treats like ice cream, and even fresh fruit!
