What are bacon twists?

Bacon twists are exactly what they sound like… twisted bacon! The twist creates a crispy exterior and a chewy interior for the best of both worlds when it comes to bacon.

Why I love this recipe

  • It’s easy! It looks like it may take a few extra minutes, but it’s incredibly simple to make.
  • It’s fun. Serving twisted bacon at brunch is going to impress your guests much more than regular ol’ bacon.
  • You can adjust the flavor. Add more black pepper of even cayenne if you want it spicy, or more sugar if you want it sweeter. It’s totally customizable.

How do you twist bacon?

You don’t need a special tool or mold to make twisted bacon. All you need is to hold both ends of the bacon and twist it by hand into a spiral. Place it on the baking sheet in the same twisted shape and top it off with your seasonings (this recipe uses black pepper and coconut sugar). Bake in the oven for the perfect twisted bacon.

The Ingredients to make Bacon Twists

  • Bacon. It’s best to use a thinner/medium-cut bacon as thick-cut bacon won’t twist as easily.
  • Coconut Sugar. This has a brown sugar type of taste! You can also just use brown sugar if that’s what you have on hand.
  • Black Pepper. You can omit this if needed or add another spicy element like cayenne if you’d like.

  • Step 3. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes before removing from the oven and flipping. Bake for another 18-20 minutes or until the bacon is cooked to your liking.

How to make Bacon Twists in the Air Fryer

  • Twist the bacon as described above.
  • Add to the air fryer basket and season.
  • Air fry at 350 F for 10-12 minutes. Time will vary depending on your air fryer, and how full it is, so check often.

Tips & Tricks to making Oven Twisted Bacon

  • Season it! Don’t forget to season generously!
  • Check your bacon often. Since this bacon, if twisted, doesn’t cook quite like bacon does when it’s flat. So once it gets close to the cooking time, keep an eye on it to make sure it gets to the desired texture.
  • Pack your bacon close next to each other so it holds its twisted shape. If you spread the bacon out too much, it’s more likely to unravel.
  • Don’t use bacon that’s too thick. If it’s too thick, it won’t hold the shape as well.

Notes

Depending on the size of your air fryer, scale the recipe down to accommodate the size.

Omit the black pepper for AIP.

If spicier bacon is desired, add cayenne pepper.

If you’d rather keep it coconut free, brush the bacon with 1 tbsp of honey instead.
