What is tigernut butter?

Tigernut butter is the perfect nut-free “nut butter” that nobody is talking about. It’s made with tigernut flour, avocado oil, and other flavorings to make a delicious and easy spread that tastes just like nut butter that you can use the exact same way that you would peanut butter or almond butter.

So, tigernuts aren’t nuts?

They’re not! Tigernuts are actually tubers but have a similar texture and flavor to nuts. They’re the perfect nut-free substitute for those who are also avoiding seeds and can’t tolerate something like sunbutter.

The Ingredients for the Tigernut Butter

  • Tigernut flour. I like the brands Anthony’s, and Organic Gemini. You can learn more about tigernut flour here!
  • Avocado oil. This is what turns the ground up tigernuts into a spreadable butter!
  • Maple syrup. Any other liquid sweetener should also work fine.
  • Cinnamon.
  • Sea salt.

How to make Tigernut Butter

  • Blend all of the ingredients in a food processor until smooth, stopping to scrape the sides to fully incorporate.
  • Adjust to desired creaminess. Add 1-2 tbsp more avocado oil if a creamier butter is desired, or more maple syrup if you’d prefer it to be sweeter.
  • Store the tigernut butter in a glass container and enjoy! Store in the fridge for 7-10 days.

Where do you buy Tigernut flour?

You can buy it from many health food stores, or online from retailers like Amazon.

Can you use coconut oil instead of avocado oil?

Technically you can. However, since coconut oil solidifies so much, the texture of the tigernut butter hardens up in the fridge.

What can you eat with tigernut butter?

  • Apples
  • Bananas
  • etc!

You can mostly use it as a replacement for nut butter in most recipes! It really does depend on the recipe for whether or not it will work, but it’s a very close second to something like almond butter or peanut butter so it’s worth trying.
