This BBQ jackfruit a plant-based dupe for something like pulled pork! This recipe is vegan, vegetarian, paleo, and easy to make whole30 and AIP.

What is BBQ Jackfruit?

Jackfruit is a huge exotic fruit with a hard shell and a yellow flesh that tastes absolutely delicious! It’s slightly sweet, chewy, and actually makes a great meat substitute for those who are looking for a plant-based option. Even for those who are meat-eaters like myself, it’s a fun way to mix it up.

BBQ jackfruit has become a popular dish as it mimics the look and feel of BBQ pulled pork, but is totally plant-based! It’s really easy to make and will be ready much faster than a slow-cooked pulled pork. This version is paleo, vegan, and can be made whole30 and AIP.

How to make BBQ Jackfruit

  • Drain the can of jackfruit to remove any excess liquid.
  • Using a large pan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the jackfruit and season with salt, pepper, garlic, onion, chili powder (optional), and coconut sugar. Stir well to coat and cook for 2-3 minutes to soften.
  • Add the BBQ sauce and stir well to coat. Simmer for another 3-4 minutes.

  • Serve topped with diced green onion.

What jackfruit should you use for BBQ jackfruit?

If you can get your hands on fresh jackfruit, it’s amazing! I haven’t tried actually cooking with fresh jackfruit, but it’s so delicious to snack on. For cooking, I use the Native Forest brand jackfruit. I found this at Sprouts, but you can likely find it at a lot of different health food stores as it’s growing in popularity. It’s also available online. Here are the ingredients in the canned fruit…
