French onion burger sliced in half.

French onion is one of my all-time favorite flavors. It’s rich, decadent, and perfect in dishes like pasta (or my French Onion Spaghetti squash) and rice dishes like my One Pot French Onion Chicken & Rice. My husband and I have been on a burger kick recently, and I decided to give this recipe and go… and I am so glad that I did!

This French Onion Burger is a rich, buttery and decadent burger, but made with ghee instead of butter.

Why you’ll love this French Onion Burger

  • It’s SO decadent. You know those hipster burger places with fancy burgers? This is exactly the kind of burger you’d get there, and it tastes just like the real deal.
  • French onion goodness. These caramelized onions are made with a perfect french onion flavor.
  • So filling and satisfying. You’ll be so satisfied after having this burger!

Recipe Ingredients

Ghee sticks and onion.
  • Beef patties. You can easily find frozen or fresh beef patties that are unseasoned in most stores, or you can make your own!
  • Yellow onion.
  • Coconut aminos and red wine vinegar.
  • Gluten-free buns.
  • Goat cheddar cheese.  Goat cheese is not lactose-free, but goat cheese is lower in lactose than regular cheese. It truly depends on the person, but as someone who doesn’t tolerate cow dairy, I find myself tolerating goat cheese well. I recently polled my Instagram audience and found a similar response. Either way, you can always leave to out if needed!
  • Fourth and heart ghee sticks and spray. Ever since I started uncovering more about my complicated relationship with dairy, Fourth and Heart has been my go-to for YEARS. I use their ghee butter exactly like I would regular butter to make rice, pasta, toast, and this amazing recipe.

Tips & Tricks

  • Make it a burger bowl. If you don’t have a gluten free bun on hand or one that you like, make it a burger bowl by serving it over lettuce!
  • Don’t forget the fries. I serve this recipe with my baked white sweet potato fries!

French Onion Burger {gluten free}

This French Onion Burger is a restaurant-style burger at home! It’s gluten-free and low lactose.

Ingredients

For the onions

  • 1 tbsp fourth and heart Ghee Butter Stick, Unsalted
  • 1 ½ yellow onions, sliced thin
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 2 tsp coconut sugar, optional, see notes
  • 1 tbsp coconut aminos
  • 1 tbsp red wine vinegar
  • ½ tsp dried thyme

For the burgers

For serving

  • 2 tbsp mayo of choice
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper
  • 2 gluten-free buns of choice

Instructions

  • Using a medium skillet, heat the ghee over medium-low heat. Add the yellow onions to the pan and a pinch of salt. Stir the onion for about 20 minutes, allowing to cook slowly. To speed up the process, add the coconut sugar and toss to coat.
  • Saute for about another 5 minutes and add the coconut aminos, red wine vinegar and dried thyme. Stir until the onions are softened and golden brown. Set aside.
  • While the onions are caramelizing, preheat the oven to 375 F (alternatively, you can use an outdoor grill if weather permits). Season the burgers with salt and pepper.
  • Prepare a large baking sheet with parchment paper and spray with ghee cooking spray. Add the burgers and bake for 20-25 min or until cooked to your liking, and flipping halfway. Add cheese if desired and broil to melt. Set aside.
  • Combine the mayo and garlic powder to make an aioli and add to the tops of the buns.
  • Layer the burgers with the onion on top, and top off with the burger bun.

Notes

Coconut sugar helps to speed up the caramelization process, but you can easily omit it if desired and just cook the onions longer.
