What is Texas Toast? How is Texas Toast Different from Garlic Bread?
I remember my mom buying the frozen boxes of Texas toast when I was a kid to bake in the oven and serve with dinner. It’s definitely a frozen food classic. Texas toast is essentially a thick slice of toast that’s brushed with butter, garlic, and parsley. It’s similar to garlic bread, but there are two key differences…
- Texas toast is sliced into thick toast slices, whereas garlic bread usually isn’t
- Texas toast should be fried in a pan, and garlic bread is usually baked in the oven
That’s right! If you want to do it the right way, you fry it up in a pan rather than bake it! It’s crispier, it’s actually faster, and it’s what my Texan husband told me I have to do if I want it to be the real thing.
Texas Toast doesn’t have to be eaten out of a box to be delicious. This version is gluten-free and even lactose-free!
The Ingredients for this recipe
- Ghee. Ghee isn’t actually butter, it’s clarified butter! That means that the milk solids are removed which makes it lactose-free. It can be a great option for those who are lactose intolerant but still want to enjoy the flavor and benefits of butter. My favorite brand is fourth and heart ghee!
- Garlic. Fresh garlic cloves are best!
- Gluten-free sourdough loaf. Bread SRSLY is my favorite GF sourdough! I get it shipped to my house and just freeze any extras I have. The quality is amazing, and the flavor is incredible. You can use my code UNBOUNDWELLNESS for free shipping on your first order!
How to Make GF Texas Toast
- Make the spread: Using a small bowl, combine the ghee, garlic, salt, pepper, and parsley until well combined. Set aside.
- Slice the toast: Slice the bread into thick slices about 1.5″-2″ thick. Spread a generous amount of the ghee mixture onto each side of the toast. Repeat for all slices.
- Fry: Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Fry the toast on each side for 2-3 minutes or until the bread is crispy. Repeat for all of the bread.
Can you make this recipe ahead of time?
This recipe is best fresh as that’s when it the crispiest, but you can make it ahead of time and reheat in a pan if desired.
Can you make it in the oven?
Technically you can, but it’s a lot more crispy when you fry it in a pan!
Can you make this AIP?
The bread itself isn’t AIP, but check out my recipe for AIP garlic & herb dinner rolls for a great alternative to bread!
