Why you’ll love my gluten-free Texas toast
I may be from New York originally, but y’all know I live in Dallas, and boy howdy, do I have to share Texas Toast with you 😉
Growing up on Long Island in an Italian American family, garlic bread was a staple. And how could you get better than garlic bread? But when I moved to Texas, I was introduced to Texas Toast. It’s the southern cousin of garlic bread that’s perfect to serve with an oven-braised chuck roast, or any savory dish of your choice.
Here’s why you’re going to love it…

- Homemade and crisped fresh! There are frozen gluten-free Texas Toasts, but this one is pan fried fresh!
- Crispiness and flavor in every bite. Since it’s panfried in large slices, it has a buttery, garlicky, and crisp flavor in every single bite.
Texas Toast Vs Garlic Bread… what the heck is the difference?
- Texas toast should be fried in a pan, and garlic bread is usually baked in the oven. If you want to do it the right way, you fry it up in a pan rather than bake it! It’s crispier, it’s actually faster, and it’s what my born-and-raised-Texan husband told me I have to do if we want it to be the real thing.
- Texas toast is an extra-thick slice of bread, rather than a whole loaf of bread like garlic bread. Garlic bread can be a lot of different things, but it’s usually made with a whole loaf of bread that’s crisped up. Texas toast is sliced into thick individual slices to make every bite crispy!
Recipe Ingredients

- Ghee. Ghee isn’t actually butter, it’s clarified butter! That means that the milk solids are removed which makes it lactose-free. It can be a great option for those who are lactose intolerant but still want to enjoy the flavor and benefits of butter. My favorite brand is fourth and heart ghee!
- Garlic. Fresh garlic cloves are best!
- Gluten-free sourdough loaf. Bread SRSLY is my favorite GF sourdough! I get it shipped to my house and just freeze any extras I have. The quality is amazing, and the flavor is incredible. You can use my code UNBOUNDWELLNESS to save on your first order!
Let’s Make Homemade Texas Toast, but gluten-free!
- Make the spread: Using a small bowl, combine the ghee, garlic, salt, pepper, and parsley until well combined. Set aside.
- Slice the toast: Slice the bread into thick slices about 1.5″-2″ thick. Spread a generous amount of the ghee mixture onto each side of the toast. Repeat for all slices.
- Fry: Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Fry the toast on each side for 2-3 minutes or until the bread is crispy. Repeat for all of the bread.
Michelle’s Tips & Tricks
- Fresh garlic is key. Seriously, don’t waste your time on garlic powder! Fresh garlic gives it the real flavor you want.
- You can use other butter alternatives if needed. Use a vegan butter if you prefer!
Recipe FAQS
This recipe is best fresh as that’s when it the crispiest, but you can make it ahead of time and reheat in a pan if desired.
Technically you can, but it’s a lot more crispy when you fry it in a pan!
