What are burger bowls?
Burger bowls are such a fun way to get everything you love about burgers without the bun! It’s essentially a deconstructed burger served in a bowl over lettuce that features toppings that you love, and a yummy sauce. It’s easy to make, and totally customizable to your tastes!
This burger bowl is paleo, keto, whole30, and easy to make AIP! Of course, you can always mix it up, but this particular version has a delicious balance of savory flavors that makes it feel like you’re eating at a fancy burger joint for minimal effort at home.
The ingredients you’ll need for burger bowls
- Ground beef
- Mushrooms
- Red onion
- Romaine lettuce (or butter lettuce)
- Bacon
- Avocado
- Pickles
- Mayo sauce
How to Make Homemade Burger Bowls
- Make the mayo sauce.
- Brown the beef: Using a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat and season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
- Cook the mushrooms: Cook for 4-5 minutes or until tender.
- Assemble the burger bowls: Dividing the ingredients between 4 bowls. Add the lettuce and top with the mushrooms, red onion, bacon, avocado slices, cooked ground beef, and a few pickles per bowl. Top with the mayo sauce.
Can you make this ahead of time? How would you store it?
This burger bowl can easily be cooked and then assembled at a later time. Simply store the ingredients separately to ensure freshness!
Do you have to use the mayo sauce? Can you use something else?
The mayo sauce really adds something extra, but you can also use something like an avocado sauce or even a chimichurri sauce!
Can you use turkey instead of beef?
For sure! Turkey burger bowls would be perfect for this recipe as well.
Can you mix up the toppings?
Totally! If you don’t like mushrooms, you can easily leave them off. Or if you’d like to add tomato, you can go ahead and add those! You can also add something like cheese if you tolerate it.

Ingredients
For the mayo sauce (see notes for AIP)
- 1/2 cup compliant mayo (see notes for options and for AIP)
- 1 tbsp compliant ketchup
- 2 tsp garlic powder
For the burger bowls
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 tsp sea salt, divided
- 1/4 tsp black pepper (omit for AIP)
- 2 tsp garlic powder
- 8 oz baby bella mushrooms, sliced
- 1/2 red onion, sliced thin
- 4 strips of bacon, cooked and chopped
- 1 large avocado, sliced
- 8–10 pickles
Instructions
For the mayo sauce
- Mix the ingredients well to combine. Set aside in the fridge.
For the burger bowl
- Using a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat and season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Set aside and reserve about 2 tbsp of fat in the pan.
- Add the mushrooms to the pan and lightly salt. Cook for 4-5 minutes or until tender. Set aside.
- Assemble the burger bowls by dividing the ingredeints between 4 bowls. Add the lettuce and top with the mushrooms, red onion, bacon, avocado slices, cooked ground beef, and a few pickles per bowl. Top with the mayo sauce.
- Serve fresh and enjoy! If saving for later, store the ingredients seperately to ensure freshness.
Notes
For a whole30 mayo use this, for compliant ketchup, use this. For keto ketchup, use this. You can also use storebought brands like primal kitchen.
For AIP, you can use an AIP mayo as a topping, or something like an avocado sauce or even a chimichurri sauce!
