“Made this the other day and I LOVED it! I didn’t really have another recipe to use with canned tuna before, so I really enjoy having something different to add to my rotation.” – Andrea
My All-Time Favorite Easy Lunch
Making lunch from scratch every day is just not in the cards for me. Who has the time to make a chicken bowl, or even a soup and salad combo every single weekday? Don’t get me wrong, I love to throw together lunches like my dill pickle chicken salad for meal prep, but sometimes you need something even easier. Something that requires zero cooking, but is still packed with protein and fiber.
That’s where this avocado tuna salad comes in! Here’s what I love about it…
- No cooking required. This recipe relies on canned tuna, and simple fruits and veggies!
- The best portable lunch. I bring this recipe with me on the go all of the time. It’s so easy that I can even prep all of the components ahead of time and eat it in my car last minute.

Recipe Ingredients
See the recipe card below for full information on ingredients and quantities.

- Canned tuna. I love using skipjack tuna!
- Avocado. Grab a ripe avocado to make it easier to mash.
- Lemon. This adds acid and helps to keep the avocado from browning. You can also use lime if needed.
- Apple, red onion, and celery. The perfect combo for a crisp crunch!
Let’s Make Avocado Tuna Salad…
Here are the simple steps, with photos, to make this recipe. Find full instructions in the recipe card.

Step one. Mash the avocado in a bowl.

Step two. Add all of the ingredients to a bowl.

Step three. Combine and serve in a sandwich, with chips, or with crackers!
Seriously, it’s the best lunch on the go. Here’s how to pack it for ultimate freshness…
I’m not kidding when I say that this is a huge staple in my life. Having food allergies, I rely on easy and filling meals on the go when I have to attend an event that doesn’t have anything I can eat. I’ve eaten versions of this recipe in my car more times than I can count. Here’s how I swing that…

- Prep the components ahead of time and store them separately. This will keep everything fresh and crisp! I dump it all into a larger container and just mix with a fork.
- Use a cooler bag and ice. Since the tuna is out of the can, you definitely want to keep it chilled.
- Grab a guacamole cup for an even bigger shortcut. I use the Good Foods avocado mash for the ultimate hack. These are sealed, so you don’t have to worry about browning!
Michelle’s Tips & Tricks
- Dice everything around the same size. You want a fine dice on all of your fruits and veggies so you don’t have any giant pieces that feel out of place.
- Use a ripe avocado. Obviously, the perfect avocado is a unicorn, but make sure your avocado is at least a little bit ripe so it’s easier to mash.
How to serve avocado tuna salad
- Serve it on a sandwich
- Make it a wrap
- Serve with crackers or chips
Recipe FAQS
Though the can will always tell you otherwise, I always recommend draining tuna before making a salad so there isn’t too much excess water.
Healthy is always subjective, but this recipe is packed with protein, fiber, and tuna is full of vitamin D! (source)

This is such a creative and delicious way to eat tuna. I’ve been trying to get my husband on board with tuna for so long and I finally found a recipe that he actually enjoyed. Thank you so much!
I think I am going to swap out the tuna for the fish we have in freezer we caught this summer.
Absolutely delicious! I omitted the onion and added some olive oil since I didn’t have a lemon but highly recommended. I ate mine with some of the leftover apple and celery and was happy and how filling it was.
This is so freakin good!!! I’ve had it on my list to try for awhile now. So glad I finally did! Will definitely be making this again! Thank you!
This is amazing! And so quick & easy to make! I’ll be eating it for lunch a lot now that I’ve discovered this recipe.
So amazing! This is so quick & easy to make. I put extra apple in mine. I was thinking about adding grapes, like the chicken salad recipe you have. Thank You! Keep up the great work!
Yay! Thank you so much, Kristina! So glad you liked it! 🙂
This was AWESOME. My husband loves classic tuna salad with mayo but can’t have it due to allergies. This was even BETTER than the old standby. Apples are a great addition too!
Awesome! Totally easy to make. Surprisingly filling. And a nice change of flavor to a lot of other AIP compliant things I’ve been making lately… so exactly what I needed to keep me going!! Thank you!!!
Super easy & great tasting! Really loved it!
Would the avocado keep if I were to make a week worth for lunches?
It would likely brown a bit. I suggest making it fresh if possible 🙂
Delicious! I made this two times. I had to make it without the avocado the first time because mine was still too hard. It was fabulous with mayo. The second time, I made it properly with the avocado replacing the mayo. It was fabulous! I will definitely be using avocado as a mayo replacement more often. I also really loved the apple and celery additions to this tuna salad. Thank you!
Yay! Thank you so much, Kathy!
OMG, this was amazingly delicious! I chopped everything up and added chopped arugula. This may end up being a weekly thing!
Thank you so much, Denise!! So happy you like it!
Made this yesterday for lunch. First of all, I’m not a tuna fan but when I wasn’t watching what I ate, I could make a pretty tasty tuna salad sandwich and actually enjoyed it. This was pretty good and though it’s not my favorite, I can eat it again. I also have mercury toxicity which I am working on and haven’t had any tuna for some time. The tuna I have is wild caught and is highly rated so hopefully that won’t derail my detoxing. If you love tuna, you will love this. I’m just don’t love tuna.
I made this for lunch today and it was fantastic!! I liked it so much I went out and bought more Ingredients so I can make it again this week. I subbed canned salmon for tuna. The recipe is very forgiving. I shared a photo of it on my FB page along with your recipe and a couple of my friends have already made it. Thanks for all the great recipes and for blogging!
Yay! Thank you so, so much Laura! Salmon would be great too… gotta try that 🙂
Made this tonight! Would be perfect to take to work for lunch or for a picnic lunch! So yummy!
So glad you liked it, Heidi!! Thanks you 🙂
