Two real fruit slushies with straws ready to be enjoyed

We’re all familiar with slurpees from 7/11 or slushies from a machine at fast food joints like Sonic, right? They were a childhood and teen favorite for me, but man, were they sweet! Slushies usually aren’t made with actual fruit, they’re basically closer to a blended snow cone with ice and a syrup. Since I love using fruit as much as I can during the summer with recipes like my fruit rice paper rolls or homemade fruit and veggie snacks, I knew I had to tackle a slushie too!

These real fruit slushies are a better-for-you version of the classic you know and love! They’ll make you feel like you’re hanging out in the park with your high school friends on a summer night, but with more wholesome ingredients.

Can you really make fruit slushies with just a blender?

Yes! You don’t need a fancy machine designed specifically for making slushies or even a specific ice shape. All you need is a high-speed blender to make a slushie. I highly recommend a vitamix, but you should be able to use other high-speed blenders.

Recipe Ingredients

See the recipe card below for full information on ingredients and quantities.

All the ingredients needed for real fruit slushies.
  • Frozen Cherries & Mango. Frozen fruit is key to make this a frozen drink with that slushie texture.
  • Orange Juice. This is used for the mango slushie.
  • Grape Juice. This is the liquid for the cherry slushie.
  • Ice. Even though the frozen fruit gives the slushie that icey texture, I still think adding extra ice really adds more of that crunchy, icey vibe that we all expect from a slushie.
  • Honey. Fruit juice and fruit itself is plenty sweet, but if you want a little more sweetness, you can add honey!

Fruit Slushie Flavor Variations

  • Blueberry Grape. Frozen blueberries, and grape juice would make a perfect flavor combination.
  • Watermelon Lime. Combine frozen watermelon, water, and lime juice for this flavor. I have a recipe for a frozen watermelon margarita mocktail that’s very similar!
  • Pineapple. You can combine frozen pineapple and pineapple, orange or mango juice for this flavor.
  • Fruit of Choice & Sparkling Water. And if you don’t want fruit juice at all, you can swap in sparkling water for a bubbly vibe to your slushie!

Michelle’s Tips & Tricks 🤓 🍒

  • Don’t over-blend! Blending the slushie for too long will eventually turn it into more of a smoothie texture. Lean towards the side of blending less, and then just blend more as needed.
  • Add more liquid if needed. If your blender is a bit on the weaker side, it may need an extra splash of liquid to blend easier.
  • Cut the fruit juice with water or sparkling water for less sugar. A slushie is definitely a treat and will be sweet, but if you want it to cut down the sugar a bit, you can use less juice and water instead.

  • ½ cup grape juice
  • ½ cup water, see notes
  • 1 tbsp honey, optional

For the mango orange slushie

Equipment

Instructions

  • Add the fruit, ice, juice, water and honey (if using) to a high speed blender. Blend on high until smooth, for about 8-10 seconds. You want the slushie to be liquid, but still have the icey mouth feel, so I suggest trying a spoonful at the 8-10 second mark, and blending further to your desired texture if needed.
  • Use a spoon to spoon the slushie into a glass. Serve with a thick straw!
